4. 2005 Land Rover LR3 SE. This 2005 Land Rover LR3 SE is listed for $12,000. Land Rover dropped the Discovery name for a while in the U.S., but our LR3 was the rest of the world’s Discovery 3. It used a BMW 4.4-liter V8 paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and its unique architecture moved from body-on-frame to a hybrid construction
The 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport offers just one engine: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque.

Can’t get the drivers side door lock actuator off? Watched a million videos already? We have the final trick to get the driver side door lock actuator off! We couldn’t find this in any other video. These steps are the same for doing a door handle replacement that has a lock. This video shows a 2001 Land Rover Discovery 2, drivers door actuator and handle fix Can’t get the video for whatever reason (likely in your garage with slow service - we’ve been there!). PUSH the drivers side door handle toward the front of the vehicle to get the door handle unattached from the vehicle. It is hard to dislodge but it will come off.

We decided to give our Land Rover Discovery extra protection with custom made skid plates. While off-roading we have had tree logs barely miss puncturing our gas tank and rocks dent our transmission pan. It was time to better protect ourselves while adventuring and when we often only have ourselves to rely on. Checking Out the New Custom Skid Plates at the Shop We decided to get our skid plates custom made vs ordering and shipping them from the few companies that make them. We decided to go this route since shipping is a pain and the Canadian dollar is weak. But our customization choice largely came from seeing a local automotive shop owner’s off-road buggy that he made and we were impressed by his metal skills. The Custom Built Off-Road Buggy That Wowed Us Why did we install skid plates? If you value your transmission, steering system, fuel tank and transfer case and go off-roading to any serious extent you may want to consider protecting the underside of your vehicle. We had 3 plates installed this round by Pro-Active Automotive in Calgary, Alberta Canada. We had previously ordered and installed a Terrafirma fuel guard we purchased a from another local shop, TRS. Custom Skid Plates for our Land Rover Discovery Front Steering Guard Skid Plate The front steering guard skid plate was created from a slightly scratched piece of aluminium. Instead of it having a few scratches, which we wouldn’t have minded since it’s going to get scratched up anyways, Dean from Pro-Active gave it a nice design for eye appeal. One nicely designed feature of these skid plates are the attachment nuts. They are welded to the frame mounts so there are no free floating nuts to mess around with while attaching the bolts to the underside. The plates are easy to remove by one person if required. Custom Made Front Steering Guard Skid Plate Transmission Skid Plate Another great feature designed into the skid plates was cutting holes to help prevent the exhaust from cooking the underside of the vehicle. Transmission Skid Plate Since we have an irreparable transfer case leak due to the systemic ovaling of the case around the intermediate shaft which if kept topped up with fluid hasn’t seemed to cause any issues other than a oil puddle in the garage we decided to have an absorbent pad placed under the transfer case between the skid plate. This keeps things clean and stops foul smells from oils getting onto exhaust and burning on startup. The Absorbent Pad, Which We Dubbed The Pillow Solution Transfer Case Skid Plate Under Armor Installed! Terrafirma Fuel Guard (self installed) Terrafirma Fuel Guard Fresh Out of the Box The Fuel Guard didn’t line up with our bolts as required so we had to widen the bolt holes to make it fit. Our Land Rover Discovery’s original skid plate is next to the new in this photo. It is significantly narrower and ours had rusted out holes where it should be protecting. Our kids love being involved in any vehicle modification - their own tools and a piece of wood makes great entertainment. Drilling Out the Bolt Holes Terrafirma Fuel Guard Installed Good luck on your journey of installing skid plates, happy adventures and reach out if you have any questions. Embracing the adventurous spirit that has defined the Discovery family for over 30 years, new Land Rover Discovery Sport is designed for life. Balanced propo
We bought our 2001 Land Rover Discovery ii SE in 2011, no upgrades or accessories had been added. There are many functional upgrades to do on a Land Rover Discovery 2 that end up looking really solid (in our opinion). Top 3 favorite Land Rover Exterior Upgrades: Bumper Winch Rock rails Keep reading to see what worked and what didn’t. Pup Hanging out in Land Rover with New Bumper and Winch in Canadian Rockies Custom Aftermarket Land Rover Discovery Bumper We had owned our Disco 2 for a few years before adding an aftermarket bumper, winch and rock rails. I think my husband knew he wanted these upgrades the minute we purchased our Disco but it took me a few adventures to learn we needed them for my own peace of mind. We wanted a bumper for protection and a winch for getting ourselves and friends out of sticky situations. Our first decision was if we were going to purchase a bumper or have one custom made. After doing some research our final decision largely came down to cost. We live in Canada and the bumpers we were looking to purchase we needed to order out of the USA, our dollar sucks and shipping just adds to the expense. We lucked out and found a local builder that built us a custom bumper and we are happy with the choice we made. He did a great job makinging it simple, beefy and contoured to the front of the Disco 2. We based the design loosely off the Safari Designs and we required clearance for Kingone winch. The bumper was at first coated with one of the Canadian Tire Husky Brand Bed Liner paints which lasted about a season and then started to show signs of rusting. When we had the engine out to be swapped we decided to have the bumper sand blasted and then coated with a spray on bedliner, we went with Line-X from Calgary South. This shop has amazing Customer Service and our Linex has held up perfectly over the years. We have spray on bedliner protection (Line-X brand) on our bumper, roof and rock rails. It is seriously tough and is surprisingly still shiny and looking great after several years. Photos of Custom Aftermarket Disco Bumper Removal of Stock Bumper Welding of Custom Bumper Bare Bones of Bumper Build All Done! Bumper with Linex and Painted Kingone Winch Winch and Wireless Winch Remote We have a Kingone Winch with wireless remote. We choose the Kingone winch based off of good reviews and thought it was a decent price. Shortly after installation we were in a situation where we needed to use it. I’ve got to say it was a nice experience, after your buddy (or spouse) was outside and hooked up your rope all you have have to do is sit inside, turn the power on to your winch remote and start pulling yourself up! Here is a link to a review of winches showing the performance of the Rock Sliders Installed Terrafirma Rock Sliders with Tree Guards. Purchased from TRS Automotive in Calgary. They fit perfectly to the slightly upturned silhouette of the lower door sill of a Disco 2. We had them coated with Line-X to help give them grip when walking on them along the side of the vehicle, this is really handy when working on the roof rack. There is a lot of terminology out there when it comes to Rock Sliders, Rails, Guards and Bars. Rock Slider and Rock Rail, I count these terms as the same thing. They are aftermarket, heavy duty rails that attach to the chassis to protect the door sills and bottoms from rock damage when you are out having fun. When you are looking at purchasing any of type of side rock protection check out reviews as some dent went hit even though you think they should be able to take impact. We did have some Linex chipped off in a fender bender but no dents in the Terrafirma (yet) but we aren’t aggressively using them. The rock sliders have also helped teach our son how to walk! They are easy to grab and perfect walking height.
Today I took the Land Rover Discovery II to the local off road playground to test it out for the first time.Don't forget to visit my website for more updates
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) - Traction Control (TC) - Hill Descent Control (HDC) The Land Rover Discovery 2 comes with ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS), TRACTION CONTROL (TC) and HILL DESCENT CONTROL (HDC) as Standard. This content was developed by and owned by Paul Sinkinson, Xplorability owner. Paul is a 4wd Defensive Driver Training Consultant/Trainer and Programme Developer. Some EARLY Discovery 2 Models came with the CENTRAL DIFFERENTIAL LOCK (CDL) fitted as standard but there was a period when firstly although the inner workings for the Transfer Box CDL were installed, Land Rover for reasons unknown to me and others, did not install the Lever Mechanism to operate the CDL. Eventually, for a period they also removed the inner mechanism. Later, they added the CDL again or it was available as an extra. The CDL internal mechanism/transfer case and also the necessary operating levers etc. can be Retro-Fitted if required by specialist companies or they can be supplied as a kit for self installation. Check out ASHCROFT TRANSMISSIONS in the UK. For Land Rover Discovery 2 Owners this should be read in conjunction with the Xplorability document on Crossing Ditches with Traction Control Central Differential Lock and use of rear air suspension if fitted. Information coming shortly! Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) The Discovery 2 ABS or any ABS System doesn’t mean that the vehicle will brake any better. WOW! That’s a statement you didn’t expect to read, I’m sure. What is ABS? ABS is an Anti-Lock System that is designed to detect the wheels independently should they lock up under excessive braking. When a wheel locks up, the system releases it with a pulsing braking system that allows the wheel to unlock and lock and unlock and lock many times a second and that both stops the vehicle sliding over the road surface while at the same time allowing steering input so the driver can avoid obstacles. Without that, although the driver may be able to turn the steering wheel, the vehicle would just continue to slide straight on and a collision may be unavoidable. The System requirement for the ABS to operate is for the Driver to be braking. (Usually heavily). The Discovery 2 uses the ABS System to provide Traction Control (TC) and also Hill Descent. Control (HDC) – Clever stuff that no doubt some clever technical electronics bod could go into greater detail on. Discovery 2 being driven by a colleague on hand controls Traction Control (TC) How does TC work? Traction Control works in conjunction with the ABS System in both High and Low Range and it works independently on each wheel as required. However, it ONLY works if the system recognises that the driver needs it and it does this ONLY if the driver has his/her foot on the Accelerator/Gas Pedal. (In simple terms it says HEY! They need something and they haven’t got a foot on the Brake but they have a foot on the Gas pedal so they cant be wanting ABS or HDC so it MUST be TC they’re after.) If a wheel now slips, the power will move through the transmission system and the differentials within that and the wheel will now receive all the power which in turn takes that same power from the other wheels. When the slipping wheel rotates sufficiently for the TC System to recognise this the System applies the Brake on that wheel pulsing the brake on and off slowing it down until all the wheels are receiving the same amount of power. When this happens, traction on all the wheels is now regained. BUT a Wheel has to slip and loose Traction before it is recognised and this can happen. To understand what is happening you need to know that the Discovery 2 has THREE Differentials. One in the Front Axle, One in the Rear Axle and then a Centre One that is between the front and the rear axles. Because in Permanent 4 Wheel Drive IF a Wheel looses traction the power is transmitted through those three differentials to the wheel that is slipping as that is the one offering least resistance. (OK SO THAT BIT WAS TECHNICAL) So we have for instance, FOUR Wheels – We have 100% of Transmission Power with 25% of it going to Each Wheel - 25%+25% on the Front Axle and 25%+25% on the Rear Axle. Because the Central Differential is what they call running OPEN, if a Wheel slips then a % of the power from each of the other wheels goes to that slipping wheel and in fact eventually it would receive the FULL 100% which means the other THREE Wheels Stop. IF you slow down that Spinning wheel back to it’s 25% then the other 75% is distributed back 25% to each remaining wheel and traction is regained. PHEW What a mouthful. I hope you now understand that IF the Slipping Wheel is braked sufficiently then power becomes evenly distributed to each of the wheels and you regain traction. That’s how TC works when you have the OPEN Centre Differential. What happens if I have CDL? IF YOUR Discovery 2 is fitted with a CENTRAL DIFFERENTIAL LOCK (CDL) then the system works slightly differently IF the CDL is Engaged which involves a simple movement of the Lever Sideways to the LEFT of the Vehicle Centre. NOW, IF there is Slippage on a Wheel, because the CDL is engaged, that Slippage only affects the other wheel on the Same Axle. Because the CDL is locked, the other Axle will not be affected and so although the Slipping wheel will receive the other 25% of Power from it’s opposing Wheel on the same axle it will only increase to now have 50% of the Power. The other 50% will be still available 25% to each of the wheels on the other Axle which will still have traction and drive the Vehicle forwards or backwards whichever way you were moving. So I hear you ask. What happens IF the CDL is engaged and NOW we get a Wheel on EACH Axle Spinning? WELL FOLKS Initially you are STUCK in what is termed as a CROSS AXLE Situation. (This has nothing to do with the Vehicle’s temper). With the CDL engaged, if a wheel looses traction on one or each axle then that wheel will take all the power away from the other wheel on the same axle. If it happens on BOTH Axles then each slipping wheel will be receiving 50% of the power and its opposite number will be stationary. NOW, IF you increase the throttle setting with the accelerator/gas pedal, the TC System recognises the fact that you are requiring it’s services and as you increase the power it will in turn apply the brakes to the two spinning wheels, ONE on EACH Axle. When the system slows those spinning wheels down to their 25% the other 25% of the power will move back across the transmission via the Axle Differentials to the opposing wheel and you NOW have 25% power again on each and you regain the Traction on all four wheels and the vehicle will move. The MISTAKE that drivers make is not to continue increasing the power gently and sufficiently until you have that required result and regain the traction. What happens is that they feel some movement of the vehicle, they hear the brakes being applied (which sometimes sounds dramatic with the TC “Burping” away) so they back off the power and the vehicle stops again. You DO NEED TO PRACTISE this until it comes naturally and onlookers will be most impressed. You can benefit from your TC system for all ascents and or normal mixed terrain conditions whether or not you have the Central Differential Lock facility on your Discovery 2. If you do have the CDL installed then it is usually wise to engage it well before it may be needed as long as the terrain allows for some wheel slippage (IE NOT Solid Tarmac or Similar). By using the CDL it will limit the slippage and loss of traction as described earlier and the unaffected axle will either push or drag you through an obstacle with less stress on the transmission components. Once a Wheel leaves the terrain and loses traction without CDL Engaged usually 100% of power is transmitted to it. Traction Control (TC) Brakes the spinning wheel and redistributes power back to the other wheels – regaining traction. If Centre Diff-Lock is fitted and Engaged and a wheel loses traction, only the opposing wheel on the same axle will stop. The other wheels will usually push or pull you through an obstacle. Hill Descent Control (HDC) Again, often better to engage the system once you are in Low Range on varied terrain. HOWEVER – REMEMBER – HDC does NOT WORK on short sharp steep descents as you will not have built up sufficient speed for the system recognise it is required even with your feet off the pedals. SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO on Short Steep Descent? Discovery 2 AUTOMATIC VEHICLE - Short Steep Hill Descent on Rock without the HDC THIS TAKES PRACTICE – FIRST TRY THE SYSTEM ON LEVEL GROUND AND WORK UP TO A TRYING IT ON A SLOPE Engage LOW RANGE FIRST GEAR – IF YOU HAVE CDL ENGAGE THAT AS WELL. Using your LEFT Foot on the BRAKE Pedal, apply the Brake. Now GENTLY Apply Throttle until you feel the vehicle trying to move against the Braking Resistance. Once you feel this then maintain a constant throttle while you release the brake fractionally. The Vehicle will now move slowly. If you want to stop, apply more brake pressure. If you want to move release some pressure. You now have control actually using the the Brake this time as the system of Stop or Go. So, as you descend a short rocky, firm or undulating surface you are able to manage it. SLOW IS GOOD! By using this system, with the brake being applied, you also limit suspension movement and this stops the vehicle shock absorbers bouncing on the terrain. As I said, it takes Practice. Discovery 2 MANUAL VEHICLES - Short or Steep Rock or Hard Terrain Descents or Ascents For Descents LOW Range First gear with CDL Locked if fitted. Just like the previous information for the Automatic Discovery in a somewhat similar manner BUT instead of Throttle and Brake balance you can use the Brake and Clutch Balance for slow positive control on such descents. Put the footbrake on firmly. Engage 1st Gear Low Range with CDL Locked if fitted BUT NOW, use the balance between releasing the clutch so that it engages the transmission while you release the brake pressure to allow forward movement. As with the Automatic, because you have the brake pressure applied the suspension travel will be limited so that it will not “Bounce” as much as usual over the terrain. You can use exactly the same system for such an Ascent under Slow Control when “Momentum” is not required. Normally, with the Manual Gearbox, you may not need to do this as the engine torque is sufficient to slowly take you over such terrain. However, try this and practice it in case you ever need it. Discovery 2 HILL DESCENT CONTROL (HDC) So that leaves us with HDC - What does that do? Up on the facia panel to the left of the steering wheel are “Buttons” for you to play with. The Yellow one with the picture of a vehicle descending is the one you’re after. That’s the HDC Button. Press it in when you are in High Range and ALL you get is modern Jazz as it goes Bong, Bong etc. That’s to remind you that it ONLY works on the Discovery 2 when you’re in LOW RANGE. So, engage Low Range and you will see a Green Light on the Dash Panel with the image of a descending vehicle. ALSO, it ONLY WORKS if you haven’t got your feet on any of the other pedals. IE If you have your foot on the brake the ABS system will think it is required and likewise if you have your foot on the throttle and not the brake the system may think you need TC. So once you are descending a hill take your feet off the pedals and just rest them flat on the floor to avoid the temptation as if you touch any pedals then the system will cut off and you go down steep hills with that “Tally Ho” feeling of uncertainty. When that happens, you may then hit the brakes, skid, turn sideways on a slope and the next thing you know you are upside down. BE WARNED – Keep your feet off the pedals and TRUST THE HDC SYSTEM. It’s always a good thing if the track allows, to speed up a few yards from the crest of a descent and then back off as it will wake up the HDC System and it may operate that bit earlier as you go over the edge. What does it do? Well, IF you are descending a slope in low range with the HDC button pressed in, once you have achieved a descent speed usually in excess of 6 or 8 mph the HDC will cut in independently on each wheel and control the wheel speed limiting it usually to 4 or 5 mph so you have a controlled descent when you back off the power. Excessive overuse for LONG periods on steep descents may of course cause brake fade and when this happens the indicator light on the dash panel will turn Yellow – So, turn it off and let it cool down until it goes green again. There are no Air Bags at the front. The vehicle dashboard buttons can raise the Air Bags for off-road ground clearance and lower them back to normal driving height. The dashboard buttons cannot lower the Air Bags, this can only be done if you have a PLIP with the suspension lowering button. These can be purchased if you do not own one. You may want to lower your suspension for attaching a hitch, boat, trailer, etc and in some off-roading conditions. How to Engage Air Suspension This feature will only work if the doors are closed. If your vehicle has air suspension you can press the white “Lift” button under the yellow HDC button and this will raise the rear of the vehicle circa 4 inches (100mm). A warning light will appear on the dash panel and flash until it is at full height. Be aware as the rear rises, the front will lower. Press “Lift” button again and it will lower. If you also have the “PLIP” set up you can also lower the suspension by the same amount at the rear, if you do the front goes up slightly. Reset to normal when finished. Let the vehicle raise and lower and you will be good to drive! If you air suspension has failed and you are looking into other options check out Off-Road Discovery’s Suspension - Out with the Air and in with the Coils article. If your air suspension works well for you it is recommended to change them about every 5 years. Edmunds delivers an iconic head-to-head: 2021 Land Rover Defender vs. 2021 Ford Bronco. Tested to the limit at the Edmunds’ test track and in the desert, two of the most anticipated off-roaders
In case you’ve never seen any wildlife documentaries, the Land Rover Discovery is the go to vehicle for wildlife videographers. It’s also a very popular vehicle among successful people. Why do outdoorsmen and the wealthy love the Land Rover Discovery II? There are tons of things that make the Discovery II special. Here are 8 reasons to buy a Discovery II today. 8. World’s Best Leather The leather in the Discovery II is a super high quality and very soft leather. It covers the seats, door panels, dashboard, and basically everything. Land Rover went as far as adding Kangaroo leather to the door panels. Kangaroo leather is a very soft, and subtle material. Land Rover added it right where you rest your arm on the door, putting your elbow in heaven as you drive. What other vehicle can you brag to your friends about having Kangaroo leather inside of it? 7. Stadium Seating The Land Rover Discovery II has what is called “Stadium Seating”, which means the rear seats are elevated. This gives the rear passengers excellent visibility, and allows them to see over the front occupants so everyone can complain about your driving at once. Since the rear seats are elevated, that means their headroom goes down. But, Land Rover has solved this problem by elevating the roof from the rear seats back by a few inches. You can clearly see the raised roof from the outside of the vehicle. The back seats in the Discovery II are probably some of the most comfortable rear SUV seats you’ll ever sit in. 6. Sound system The optional Harman/Kardon sound system is truly amazing for any automobile at that time. It includes no less than 12 speakers, which are scattered about to provide optimal sound for all passengers. The 12 speakers are powered by a 320 watt amplifier, along with an amplified subwoofer. All of this put together adds up to a near jaw dropping factory sound system. Seriously, the optional sound system in the Discovery II is amazing, especially for a vehicle of its age. 5. Jumper Seats Say you own a family of 7, well Land Rover has you covered. The SE7 optioned Discovery II has rear jumper seats, which fold up to give full trunk room. They’re actually big enough to fit a full grown adult. The Discovery I had a similar design, but the jumper seats faced each other, instead of facing the front of the vehicle. The design in the Discovery I looked a little cooler, but couldn’t really fit full size adults. 4. Build Quality Unlike Land Rovers of today, you really got what you were paying for if you bought a Discovery II brand new, and they weren’t cheap either. The extremely strong ladder frame for example, it’s stronger than most 1-ton pickup trucks. The axles are just as strong as 3/4 ton truck axles. The radius arms are extremely beefy, and almost all the suspension components are extremely beefy as well. Additional Discovery II Info Even little details like glass headlights, dual sunroofs, and rear climate control, they all add up to a vehicle with build quality that is better than most cars of today (2015). Quite honestly the Discovery II has a better build quality than any other off-road vehicle of the time. 3. ACE System When the Discovery I was out, the biggest complaint was its handling, Land Rover customers wanted an SUV that handled like a sports car. Well, they listened, and when they launched the Discovery II one of the options was the ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) system. RELATED: Land Rover vs Range Rover: What is the Difference? What the ACE system does, is stop the body from rolling so much. It uses a hydraulic pump, which is driven by the serpentine belt, and a hydraulic ram attached to the front and rear sway bars. If you turn either direction, the hydraulic rams push the sway bars the opposite direction, and keeps the vehicle flat in a corner. It also completely disengages at very low speeds, which allows more articulation from the front and rear to help with off-roading. 2. Air Suspension The Discovery II has air suspension equipped in the rear, and was the first SUV ever to have air suspension of any kind. This allows it ride extremely smooth, and also helps with off-roading because it can lift up the rear of the vehicle inches. This system is also self leveling, so if you have a lot of cargo or are towing something heavy, it’ll automatically level out the vehicle for you. Unfortunately the air bags aren’t the most reliable system in the world, and many Discovery IIs now have coil spring suspension in the rear. 1. Offroad Prowess Of course, the heart of any Land Rover is its off-road abilities, that’s the main reason it’s a safari vehicle after all. Features like the hill descent control, and traction control help you get anywhere you want safely. The center diff lock allows you to turn all-wheel-drive into four-wheel-drive, and locks power output to 50/50. RELATED: Land Rover vs Jeep: Which One is Actually Better? All of this combined with extremely strong axles and strong suspension components allow the Discovery II to go almost anywhere you want, the Discovery II will almost always keep up with a Jeep except when rock crawling, and as a Jeep owner I don’t say that lightly Summary Don’t get me wrong, the Discovery II isn’t the most perfect vehicle ever. But, for what you’re paying, you’re getting a lot of features that most brand new cars don’t even have. From interior quality and features, to groundbreaking suspension components, and off road durability. Nothing beats a Discovery II when it comes to quality and luxury, especially for less than $8k.

Starting at $37,995, the new Discovery Sport undercuts the all-wheel-drive BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 each by more than $2000, but we’re guessing the Land Rover will win sales based on looks alone
The Land Rover brand is know around the world for their accomplishments in the off road adventure vehicle market. In recent years the company has almost entirely abandon their Focus on off-road capabilities to move towards a luxury land boat kind of play. The Land Rover Discovery was the last of the great adventure capable vehicles with sold axles front and rear, along with a heavy duty ladder frame construction. The Discovery has to be one of the most understated off road worthy vehicles out there. This is partially because of how harmless they look in a stock configuration. While land rover did an amazing job covering up the brute like features of this SUV, I personally like these vehicles much more with out the van like front bumper that covers all the interesting drive line components. With the removal of the front bumper the discovery becomes an even better beast suitable for almost any climate and environment. Sporty Driving on and off road While most solid axle vehicles drive like boats with bad attitudes, the discovery feels more like a 6400lbs go-kart that will go anywhere given the time. This is in part because of a few key features like the massive 3ft radius arm style geometry. The radius arms, coupled with a linear action watts link set up in the back, let the rover glide over terrain at respectable speeds. Along with a well designed stock suspension geometry, Land Rover was the first to integrate an active torsion/roll bar that almost eliminates body roll entirely. This not only gives the Land Rover its sport car like steering response, but also means that the torsion bars can be turned off at low speeds to allow more articulation when crawling the rock gardens. To give better performance from the suspension the Discovery was also one of the first SUVs to have air suspension fitted to the rear. While the air system made for a nice ride, the reliability factor goes out the window. Most Rover owners will end up switching to an after market spring and shock set up such as Old Man Emu sport shocks to eliminate the chances of the air ride going out. After a day of adventure off road it’s always nice to know that the Land Rover will take me back home in comfort and luxury. With seating for up to 7, with the additional two jumper seats in the back, the discovery is surprisingly spacious for how small of a wheel base it has. For creature comforts there is dual climate control up front with heat and A/C in the back along with two nicely placed sun roofs for ventilation. All the extra windows really bring in the light from the surrounding environment and give a much more immersive feel when driving in scenic locations. For a car designed back in the 90’s the Discovery has quite a lot of electronic gismos that do too many things to even explain, but some of the most notable are the Four wheel ABS and TCS, heated seats, heated front and rear windshield, home link RF, intelligent electronic gear box, and many other fancy buttons play with as you prowl the lands. Where Land Rover missed their mark The land rover discovery has to be one of my favorite vehicles however there is still plenty of room for improvement. One of my biggest gripes with this vehicle is the engine. With a natural aspirated with making a mere 188HP and 250 Ft/lbs, You won’t be going anywhere in a hurry. The later gave the Discovery a little more push but not enough to really move this 6400lbs beast faster then lame donkey. What’s even more unfortunate is that all rover engines were plagued with a similar problem of overheating. The cooling systems on these trucks are very temperamental and without the proper upkeep don’t provide sufficient cooling. Once the land rover engine overheats there is no going back. The sleeves in the engine Will break apart from the block causing slipped sleeves syndrome or even more common the head gaskets Will be long with being painfully slow in a strait line the discovery suffers from a couple reliability issues with the drive line. One of the most common and dangerous of the drive line issues is the front drive shaft exploding. As the grease and bearings age in the unserviceable double cardan drive shaft it will eventual fail, hurling drive line shrapnel into just about everything underneath the front of the vehicle. This usually results in a massive hole in the transmission and thousands of dollars in repair bills. Most knowledgeable rover owners will either replace or upgrade the drive shaft to prevent the catastrophic failure. The Dust Runners Discovery We refer to the Dust Runners rover as The Panther because of its handling characteristics and stylings. The panther has been through some of the most trying conditions and I have to say, it’s held up pretty well over the years. Just like most peoples vehicles, it’s a work in progress and over the next year it will be going through many changes. Some time last year we took the rover up to Payson Arizona for a little fun in the mud and this video was the result of said adventure.

DRIVING ON SAND Engage Sand on Terrain Response. The key to crossing sand is to know how firm the surface is. You need to maintain momentum to drive over the sand, not sink into it. DRIVING THROUGH WATER Try to work out how deep the water is. In static, shallower water, explore on foot and use a stick to gauge the depth - or watch another vehicle go through. DRIVING ON HILLS Going uphill, approach the hill straight on and use the highest gear possible. Never turn the vehicle on a steep slope. Going downhill, engage Hill Descent Control. DRIVING ON ROCKS Before crossing rocks and scree, get out of your vehicle and assess the risks. Select Rock Crawl on Terrain Response; this will engage low-range gears. DRIVING ON GRAVEL Engage Grass/Gravel/Snow on Terrain Response. Gravel is a constantly changing, low-grip surface, so always drive at a slow speed. In this video we show how we camper our land rover discovery 2.Hope you like it Give a like and subscribe!!
Many of us off-roaders know that Land Rovers are pretty good off-road. Many of us, however, don’t really know much more than that. Even though I call myself a Jeep person I do really like Land Rovers. I loved the Discovery II I owned, up until the engine had a slipped cylinder sleeve. Since so many of us don’t know much about Land Rovers, I figured I would get us all up to speed. So, let’s look at the differences between the Discovery I and the Discovery II. Brief History Land Rover introduced the Discovery in 1989. The Discovery II used the same chassis and engine as the much more expensive Range Rover. Land Rover, however, gave the Discovery I a much lower price point. Early models in the US came equipped with a V8, but Land Rover upgraded later models to the V8. The Discovery I was the vehicle used in the “Camel Trophy” which proved its reliability in all conditions. The Discovery I ended up being a pretty good success and Land Rover introduced the Discovery II in 1999. A Discovery I sits unmolested and ready for the dirt! Both the Discovery I and Discovery II share a similar shape, but Land Rover really modernized the Discovery II. The Discovery II was the first SUV to use airbag suspension and an optional cornering enhancement system known as ACE. Unfortunately, Land Rover killed off some of the features that Land Rover enthusiasts loved such as the center differential lock. In 2004 Land Rover ended the Discovery II, which was replaced by the much less loved LR3. CDL Since the Discovery I was AWD and not 4WD it needed a differential in the transfer box. This can create some issues when off-road since all power can possibly go to only one axle and one wheel. Land Rover fixed this issue by including a center differential lock (CDL). The CDL splits power 50/50 to the front and rear no matter what. This is great for off-roading and can really help the Discovery I get out of sticky situations. Getting muddy outside of Phoenix, Arizona. Unfortunately, Land Rover got rid of the center differential lock on the Discovery II. They did this because they added a very advanced traction control system. This made the CDL obsolete in Land Rover’s eyes. While the traction control system is amazing, the possibility of all the power going to one axle is still there. Luckily this is easily cured since the center differential lock is actually there, but the linkage isn’t. Simply installing a linkage will give the Discovery II a CDL. Due to Land Rover enthusiasts complaining about the lack of a CDL on the Discovery II, Land Rover brought it back in late 2003 and 2004. Suspension Both the Discovery I and the Discovery II have a radius arm style suspension. However, the Discovery II comes with air suspension in the rear. While this does increase ride quality and help it off-road, the air-bags are prone to failure. Many people end up swapping the air-bags out for coil springs which are much cheaper and obviously more reliable. The Discovery II also has slightly stronger radius arm bushings. Swapping air suspension for coil springs. The Discovery II also had an optional sway bar system called ACE, also known as “Active Cornering Enhancement.” This system used a hydraulic pump and hydraulic rams to make the Discovery II corner extremely flat. This system can also completely disengage at low speed to increase articulation. The real differences are the air suspension, radius arm bushings, and optional ACE system. Other than that the Discovery I and Discovery II share the same suspension. They both ride and handle extremely compared to many other solid axle vehicles. Exterior/Interior The exterior and interior differences don’t really matter to the off-road community. So, we’re going to cover them as quickly as possible. The Discovery I is a bit smaller than the Discovery II and has slightly smaller overhangs front and rear. The design is slightly different but they definitely look very similar. The main exterior differences are fender flares, tail lights, turn signals, door handles, and obviously size. The interior got a massive upgrade and more features such as HomeLink. Summary There are plenty of other differences between the two SUVs, but most of them don’t really affect off-road performance. Both trucks are good off-road, but the advanced traction control system in the Discovery II will likely take it further. The small overhangs on the Discovery I make it less likely to take any sort of damage on the trail. Small overhangs can also help the Discovery I climb up extremely steep obstacles. Let me know which one you like more in the comments below!
